Who can join the club?
Oskaloosa Write Club is open to writers of all types, genres, and skill levels. Fiction and non-fiction. Aspiring and seasoned. Twenty-five years old or eighty-five years old. Writers of romance, mysteries, memoirs, haikus, or cookbooks—come write with us!
How often do you meet?
Write Club meets monthly on the second Monday. Check our calendar for details. During NaNoWriMo, we hope to host multiple write-ins per week to help boost those novel word counts.
What's NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo is an annual, international creative writing event in which participants attempt to write a 50,000-word manuscript during the month of November. NaNoWriMo is optional, of course, but it's a great way to crank out a rough draft—and loads of fun! Visit NaNoWriMo.org to learn more and sign up.
What happens at Write Club?
Our monthly meetings are part conversation, part writing. Meetings typically open with a reading about writing and include a related discussion or short activity. We talk about writing, discuss hurdles, share accomplishments, and more. We also spend at least 30 minutes writing. This could be a guided writing exercise or prompted writing session. Or, you can independently work on whatever you want to write. There's often time for sharing. You'll be encouraged (but never pressured or required!) to share.
Is there a membership fee?
Nope! Oskaloosa Write Club is free, but meetings may sometimes be held at coffee shops and/or restaurants. Making a purchase at the place of business is not required, but encouraged and appreciated!
How serious must I be about writing?
Serious enough that you are willing to show up and try putting words to the page. If you write for fun, join the club. If you dream of becoming a published author, join the club. If this is your first attempt or you've been at it for thirty years, join the club!
What about after I type "The End?"
We'd love for Write Club to become a network of local writers helping each other polish their rough drafts into publication-worthy manuscripts. Besides meetings and write-ins, we're actively brainstorming and planning future workshops covering topics like beta readers, editing, query letters, the publishing process, and even practicing performing your work (reading it out loud to an audience).
